An chance encounter reminded me that kindness is never forgotten
The most extraordinary thing happened to me this week.
After my kids finished their evening hockey match, we popped into a 24-hour grocery store to grab dinner. As we browsed, a lady I’d met briefly that evening at hockey came up to me, smiling, and said:
“I know this might sound really weird, but… is your son born on the 22nd of January 2014?”
I froze, completely taken aback. That’s not exactly an everyday question! And yes, that’s exactly my son’s date of birth.
“Yes,” I said, raising an eyebrow and giving her a questioning look.
“I knew it!” she said with delight.
She went on to explain that on the day my son was born, she had been in theatre for an emergency caesarean just before me. Complications during her procedure had delayed my own surgery.
I instantly remembered. I’d been prepped and wheeled into theatre, ready to meet my baby, only to wait what felt like hours as they worked to save the life of the woman who’d gone in before me.
“How on earth do you remember me?” I asked, stunned. It had been nearly 8.5 years, and we hadn’t seen each other since we left the hospital.
She didn’t hesitate for a second before replying:
“People never forget kindness.”
Friends, this moment stopped me in my tracks.
We often think our actions are small, insignificant, or easily forgotten. But here’s the truth: we never truly know the impact we have on others. A simple act of kindness, a thoughtful gesture, or even just being present in a tough moment can leave a lasting mark on someone’s life.
This woman didn’t remember me because of what I did—it wasn’t some grand gesture. She remembered me because kindness, no matter how simple, is never forgotten.
So today, let this be your reminder: you matter. Your kindness matters. The smallest actions can have the most extraordinary impact.
Never underestimate the power of kindness.
